Scam safety
People whose accounts are frozen are targeted a second time, by callers promising to get the money released. Read this before you speak to anyone.
Wapsi will never do any of these
- Call or WhatsApp you. Wapsi has no calling operation at all.
- Ask for your OTP, PIN, password, UPI PIN, or full account number.
- Ask you to install any app, or to share your screen.
- Ask for a percentage of your money, a “processing fee”, a “court fee” or a “clearance fee”.
- Claim to know an officer, or offer to speed up your case.
How the second scam works
Someone calls within days of your account being frozen. They know your bank, sometimes the amount. They present themselves as a cyber cell official, a bank officer, a lawyer, or an agent who “handles these cases”. They ask for an advance to file something, or for remote access to “check the status”. Once paid, they escalate: a clearance fee, a court fee, an officer's fee.
Rules that keep you safe
- No government process for a frozen account requires you to pay anyone anything. The grievance, the review, the appeal are all free.
- No police officer or bank employee needs your OTP or password for any investigation.
- Nobody can guarantee your account will be released. Anybody who guarantees it is lying.
- Verify independently. Call the number printed on your own debit card or passbook, or visit the branch. Never call back a number that was given to you.
- Do not install anything. Remote-access apps are how accounts get emptied.
- Advocates charge a professional fee for legal work and give a receipt. They do not take a percentage of your recovered money.
If you have already paid someone
Report it on cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930, immediately. Keep the payment record, the number that called you, and any chat.
