What actually happens when your account is frozen

The chain from someone else's complaint to the block on your account, and why you were never told.

Almost nobody whose account is frozen did anything wrong. Most are two or three steps down a payment trail that started somewhere else entirely.

The chain

Someone is defrauded. They call 1930 or file on cybercrime.gov.in and get a 14-digit acknowledgement number. A police officer pushes the complaint into CFCFRMS, the system that connects police to banks. From there, an electronic notice goes to every bank in the money trail, asking them to hold the reported amount.

The money rarely stops at the fraudster. It moves — to a merchant who sold something, to a trader, to a shopkeeper who accepted a UPI payment. Each of those is a “layer”, and the notice follows the money down the layers. That is how a vegetable vendor or a garment shop ends up blocked over a payment they had no reason to question.

Why nobody warned you

The hold is placed first and explained later, by design. If a genuine fraudster were warned, the money would be gone within minutes. The cost of that design is that innocent account holders find out when a payment fails.

The MHA SOP does tell investigating officers to keep in mind that a reported account may be operated without the holder's knowledge or consent, and to verify with the account holder before ordering a seizure. In practice this often does not happen, which is why the grievance route exists.

What the bank can tell you

The bank may inform you of the address and contact details of the agency that ordered the action. The Financial Intelligence Unit clarified on 2 June 2025 that sharing this is not an unlawful tip-off, because the action originated with the police. What the bank must not share is anything identifying the complainant.

What does not work

Going to the police station yourself increasingly does not work. Stations across several states now decline to issue a release or an NOC to an individual account holder and send them back to the bank. The bank branch is the door that is actually open.
